At Ormskirk Bygone Times we aim not only to bring you the interesting and varied history of Ormskirk, but also to provide you with the resources necessary to carry out your own research into your family, property or historical connection with the town. Our Friends

Lathom Park Trust – Our friends at Lathom Park Trust are committed to ‘Discovering Lathom’s long lost history and protecting it’s natural and man-made features for everyone’. Their site contains excellent information on the history of Lathom and it’s archaeology.

Skelmersdale Heritage Society – This excellent organisation is committed to preserving the heritage of Skelmersdale and their site contains a multitude of information relating to both early Skem and the later New Town.

Ormskirk & District Family History Society – Our friends at the Ormskirk & District Family History Society are experts in researching local families. For a small membership fee you can get access to their excellent library of resources.

Lancashire & Cheshire Historical Society – This charitable organisation exists ‘for educational purposes to promote the study of any aspect of the history of the Palatine counties of Lancashire and Cheshire and successor local authorities’. They have been in existence since the 19th Century and have an excellent back catalogue of journal articles relating to Lancashire including many on Ormskirk

Ancestry.co.uk – Ancestry are one of the leading genealogical websites in the World. Their excellent library of resources will provide you with a wealth of information if you are researching your family history and they also carry many directories and photos relating to Ormskirk.

Find My Past – Another genealogical site, Find My Past offer a vast array of resources for researching your family history.

Force War Records – This excellent site contains a vast array of records relating to the British Armed Forces. Ideal if you are researching a family member who was in the military, you can search for free, but will need a subscription to view the majority of records.

National Archives – The National Archives contains records relating to over 1000 years of British History. You can search their online catalogue and a lot of records are available to view or purchase online.

Old Maps – As Britain’s most comprehensive resource of historical maps, Old Maps will often prove useful for a wide variety of researchers. A subscription is required to get un-watermarked maps, but you can view online for free

Lancashire Libraries & Archives – A prime resource for a whole range of resources relating to Ormskirk and the rest of Lancashire. You can search the holdings of the archive and local libraries here and it is free to become a member of your local library.
